  Motorcycle Injury Statistics

On the California roads there were 411 fatal accidents involving motorcycles and 9,061 reported injuries in 2005. While worse than earlier years, these numbers aren't changing enough. Most of the accidents still result from other motorists not seeing the motorcyclist, and most of the injuries still come from head injuries.

Nationwide, motorcycle rider fatalities reached a historic low of 2116 in 1997. Beginning in 1998 motorcycle rider fatalities started to increase each year. Here are some statistics for selected California cities:

City Fatalities Accidents
Los Angeles 29 716
Beverly Hills 1 15
Palm Springs 0 1
Modesto 2 51
Palmdale 0 13
Bakersfield 2 43
Barstow 0 5
Rancho Cucamonga 2 24
Victorville 0 8
Riverside 1 52

City, or urban, riding continues to be the most dangerous. Accidents involving a single rider account for only a quarter of all motorcycle accidents. The statistics show long road trips have far fewer accidents than short local runs, which is true for automobiles as well.

Defensive driving, including the ability to swerve to avoid a collision, could prevent more accidents than relying on braking, and familiarity with the bike also reduces your chances of getting in an accident. No matter how much experience the rider has, over half of the accidents happen within the first five months of owning a bike.
